Life is occupied in both perpetuating itself & in surpassing itself; if all it does is maintain itself, then living is only not dying, & human existence is indistinguishable from an absurd vegetation.
Simone de Beauvoir
Yes, this was the quote of the day yesterday (I recommend reading it first). Same words, different perspective. We must be striving and growing to feel alive. Grow or die. But which way is up?
The question is easy for most vegetation, they seek light. They need sunlight. What we value most is a whole other thing.
From a modern Western perspective we are encouraged to seek more resources, more connection, or more power. From the perspectives of the giants of philosophy, such as the Stoics, or many religions, we strive for an improved character. From the more mystical Eastern perspective we may strive for enlightenment.
The real question is what does growth mean to you? When you read the words surpassing yourself, what came to mind?
And if you lived beyond the influence of society and there was nobody else’s expectations to live-up to, or no pressure to conform, what form of growth would you truly value?
de Beauvoir’s insight is important, it gets you moving. Your insight into what it means to you and why is essential, it gets you moving towards the light.
