Nostalgia for Americans
In his book The Road to Character, David Brooks describes how, when George Bush (Sr.) was campaigning to be president, he would cross the I’s out of the speeches his speechwriters gave him. He grew-up in an era that stressed humility; an era where it was bad form to be vain and brag of your accomplishments and lifestyle. It was a time, especially for those in public life, to stress ‘we’ rather than ‘me.’ If ever he did succumb to the pressure to be self-promotional and speak of himself his mother would call him and call him out on speaking about himself. Many voters have forgotten those days, many, like myself, have no idea what that could be like. With social media, I doubt we will ever see that again.
